Bowling Green - James Madison University officials Wednesday announced that its athletic teams will not compete in intercollegiate competitions through the weekend, thus cancelling the JMU/Comfort Inn Men's Soccer Invitational.
The Bowling Green men's soccer team was scheduled to play George Mason on Friday, Sept. 14, at 5:30 p.m. in JMU's tournament. BGSU was to play the host Dukes on Sunday, Sept. 16, on the Harrisonburg, Va., campus.
The JMU department of athletics issued the following statement Wednesday (Sept. 12) afternoon from its Athletic Director, Jeff Bourne: "This is a sad time for America and a time for reflection," said Bourne. "Out of respect for those touched by this tragedy and as a part of our national mourning, we felt it was essential that the weekend athletic events be called off."
BGSU's next scheduled contest is when it hosts the Diadora Classic at Cochrane Field, Sept. 22-23. The competing teams include Dayton, Wis.-Milwaukee and Canisius.
