Tony Malik Named to Academic All-District First Team

Bowling Green, Ohio - Senior defenseman Tony Malik was named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV University Division men's soccer team, it was announced on Thursday. Malik was named to the first team and is now put on the ballot for Academic All-America honors in February.
Malik had a 3.76 grade-point average entering this fall semester at Bowling Green State University while majoring in marketing. The Parma, Ohio, native was recently named First-Team All-MAC and All-Ohio, as well as Second-Team All-Great Lakes Region. Malik was also named to the Mid-American Conference Academic Honor Roll for the third-straight year.
Malik was the top-scoring defender on the Falcon squad this year with two goals and one assist in 17 games. One of his two goals was the game-winner in overtime at Buffalo on Sept. 30. After playing forward his first two seasons with the Brown and Orange, Malik moved to defender last season for coach Mel Mahler. Malik started 52 matches in his four years at Bowling Green and played in 74 total.
As a senior, Malik was named to the MAC All-Tournament team and was the Diadora Classic MVP, hosted and won by the Falcons. Last season, Malik was tabbed the BGSU Junior Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The 2001 Verizon Academic All-District IV Team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
As a first-team all-district selectee, Malik's name will appear on the national ballot for the Verizon Academic All-America Men's Soccer Team, which will be announced Feb. 5.
The Falcons ended the 2001 season with a 8-8-1 overall record and reached the semifinals of the MAC Tournament, before losing to eventual MAC Champions Kentucky, 1-0.
