Bowling Green, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference office announced on Thursday the 2001 MAC Men's Soccer Honor Roll and All-Academic Team with seven Bowling Green State University players being honored.
Seniors Tony Malik (3.76/marketing), Ben Vaccaro (3.42/history), Detrick Matthews (3.41/social work) and Kevin Wisniewski (3.83/economics), junior Matt Leardini (3.65/management info. systems), and sophomores David DeGraff (3.22/criminal justice) and Scott Tilford (3.63/business/pre-law) were the Falcons named.
Leardini, Malik, Matthews, Tilford, Vaccaro and Wisniewski were named to the Academic All-MAC Team while DeGraff was on the Academic All-MAC Honor Roll.
Student-athletes who earn a 3.25 GPA or higher and participate in at least 50 percent of competition are named to the Academic All-MAC Team. The MAC office reinstituted this award after a two-year absence. Those student-athletes who obtain a 3.00 GPA or higher and earn a letter for the current season are eligible for the All-MAC Honor Roll. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible, as a student-athlete must have attended the institution for an entire year to qualify for the awards.
This is the third-consecutive year that Malik, Matthews, Vaccaro and Wisniewski were honored by the league office for their academic success. Malik was recently named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV University Division First Team and is now a candidate for Academic All-American.
For Leardini, it was his second time to be recognized by the MAC office.
The Falcons ended the 2001 season with a 8-8-1 overall record and reached the semifinals of the MAC Tournament, before losing to eventual MAC Champion Kentucky, 1-0.
