Gymnasts Win Opener Against Missouri

Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green gymnastics squad began their new year in style Sunday afternoon with a win over the University of Missouri in their first meet of the season. The Falcons posted a score of 193.775 while Missouri received a 193.275 total team score.
"This was a good start of the season for us," said sixth-year head coach Dan Connelly. "For the first time out, we did well."
Individuals having particularly impressive performances were senior Marny Oestreng and freshman Kristin DiPietro. Oestreng, a three-time MAC All-Around Champion and six-time All-MAC performer, earned a first place finish in the floor exercise with a score of a 9.900.. She also received three second-place finishes on the bars (9.825), the vault (9.900) and the all-around (39.275). DiPietro started out her inaugural season for the Brown and Orange well, with a fourth-place finish in the vault (9.675) and a fifth place finish in the floor exercise with a score of 9.700.
The Falcons next meet is against Central Michigan Saturday, January 19 at 7 p.m. at Eppler Center Complex. When asked what he thought of Central Michigan and the upcoming MAC meet, Connelly stated that "it would be important to go in hard against them."
The Chippewas are picked second overall in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll, tied with Ball State. Both BSU and CMU received two votes as the favorite to win the MAC Championship. BG is picked sixth in the poll but did receive one vote as the projected MAC Championship winner. Defending 2001 MAC Champion Kent State also received one vote.
