Ball State Pulls Away From Falcons, 89-60

MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State University, leading by just three points at the half, opened the second stanza on a 15-5 run en route to an 89-60 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Saturday afternoon (Jan. 19). The Mid-American Conference game was held at BSU's Worthen Arena.
With the victory, the host Cardinals improved to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in MAC play. The Falcons fell to 5-12 and 2-4, respectively.
Tamara Bowie, the reigning MAC Player of the Year, had a game-high 19 points for BSU. She had 12 rebounds to tie teammate Jessica Reiter for game honors.
The Falcons had three players in double digits, led by junior Kim Griech's 13 points. Sophomore Kelly Kapferer had 11 points, while redshirt sophomore Pam Brown scored 10 points off the bench.
Sophomore point guard Lindsay Austin scored nine points, and added nine assists and seven rebounds. Austin tied her career high totals in each of the latter two categories.
The Falcons hung with the Cardinals in the first half, a half that featured five ties and eight lead changes. BGSU trailed by a 17-11 score at the 11:44 mark, but proceeded to go on an 11-0 run over a span of 3:14. Five different Falcons scored during the run, which gave the visitors a five-point lead. Griech followed a two-pointer with a three-point field goal, and Brown's jumper off a Griech assist put the Brown and Orange ahead, 22-17.
The hosts proceeded to score the next seven points to go up by a 24-22 count, but a Brown jumper was followed by an Austin basket to give BG a two-point edge with 5:02 left in the half. The Cards scored the next three points, but an Austin free throw tied the game at 27-27. Then, however, BSU freshman Kate Endress made a conventional three-point play to give the Cards the lead for good. The hosts went up by as many as six points before the Falcons got a free throw from freshman Sakima Smith and a hoop from Brown to make the halftime margin three points.
In that first 20 minutes, the Falcons shot .452 from the field, while holding the Cards to a .371 field-goal percentage. BGSU outrebounded the host school by a 24-20 margin.
In the second half, the Cards opened on the aforementioned run to take a 13-point lead, and slowly extended the advantage. The final 29-point margin was the biggest of the game.
Sophomore Stefanie Wenzel had seven rebounds to tie Austin for the team high. For the game, the Cardinals had a 49-40 advantage on the boards.
BSU shot .568 from the floor in the second half, while holding the Brown and Orange to a .265 success rate. In the game, the Cardinals made 34-of-72 shots from the field (.472), while BG was 23-of-65 (.354).
Johna Goff had 18 points for the hosts, including four three-point field goals, while Endress had 16 points off the bench and made three treys. BSU was 9-of-28 from three-point land, while BG went 6-of-19 from long range, led by Griech's 3-of-5 effort.
The Falcons will prepare for a Wednesday (Jan. 23) contest at Kent State University. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at KSU's M.A.C. Center.
