BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University cross country teams have one final race before the Mid-American Conference Championships. The Falcon men's and women's teams of head coach Cami Wells will head to the state of Alabama for Saturday's (Oct. 19) Auburn Invitational.
The meet, hosted by Auburn University, will be held at Indian Pines Golf Course. The men's race is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. locally (9:00 a.m. Eastern) with the women's race set for a 9:00 a.m. local start.
Each race is expected to include over 30 competing teams, including several nationally-ranked squads. Among the schools expected to compete are Air Force, UAB, Florida State, Georgia, Iowa, Princeton, Samford, South Florida, Stephen F. Austin, Texas Tech, Troy State and Tulane, in addition to the Falcons and the host Tigers.
"This meet will give us the opportunity to race against a lot of teams that we don't normally have a chance to see during the year," said Wells. "The only other MAC team that will be racing in Auburn is Akron. We will see a lot of teams from other regions."
The BGSU men will have a limited number of runners making the trip, as Phil King and Ed Stonestreet will be out with injuries, while Patrick Maynard will not head to Alabama due to an academic commitment.
Mario Rothmund, who has been the top Falcon finisher in each of the five races in which he has competed, will compete in Saturday's meet, as will Steve Blasko, Kris Lachowski, Troy Stiles and Josh Stucky.
The women's travel squad is expected to include Cyndi Bostdorff, Leslie Carden, Amber Culp, Elise Gould, Briana Killian, Melissa Krueger, Sarah Lohrbach, Nicole Suitor and Nicola Viljoen. Culp has led the Falcons in each of the last three races, while Killian has been the top BG finisher twice and Viljoen once.
"We have never run on the Auburn course before, but it has historically been a fast course," said Wells. "This will be our final chance to race before the MAC meet."
That MAC meet is scheduled for Nov. 2 in Oxford, Ohio.
