KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Jeff Hughes scored early in the second half to propel host Western Michigan University past the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Friday afternoon. The 1-0 loss dropped the Falcons (2-10, 2-1 Mid-American Conference) from the ranks of the MAC unbeaten.
Hughes' goal proved to be all the scoring the Broncos (3-7-2, 1-3-0 MAC) would need. The WMU freshman scored on a header off of a cross by Sado Jelovac. Scott Duhl also was credited with an assist on the goal, which came at the 46:23 mark.
At the other end of the field, Bronco goalkeeper Ian Spooner made one save en route to the shutout win. BGSU junior David DeGraff made two saves on the afternoon.
WMU held a slim advantage in shot attempts, 8-7, but had 11 corner kicks to the Falcons' two. The Broncos were whistled for 27 fouls to BGSU's 16.
BGSU returns home for a Sunday (Oct. 20) contest vs. Marshall University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
