Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green freshman Paul Seip (Huntington Valley, Pa.) scored his first two collegiate goals at the right time, helping the Falcons defeat visiting Marshall University on Sunday afternoon, 2-1, in double overtime.
The win pushes BGSU to 3-1 in the Mid-American Conference while dropping the Thundering Herd to 2-2. The game kicked off a five-game homestand for the Falcons to end the regular season.
"We competed for every minute of the game," said BGSU coach Mel Mahler. "It was two even teams. It was physical in a good sense. For us to come back in the second half was good, especially after the first goal by them."
Both teams played a close, hard-fought first half, which ended in a 0-0 halftime. However, Marshall held a 5-0 shot advantage in the first half with just one on net.
The second half momentum shifted back and forth between the two teams. BGSU began to push matters for several minutes and attempted its first shots on goal of the game, including a header by Paul Dhaliwal inside the box that was blocked by defender Brandon Mason.
But it was Marshall that struck first when senior Byron Carmichael, the league's top scorer, picked up a loose ball inside the BGSU zone, dribbled, and shot past Falcon goalie David DeGraff for a 1-0 Herd lead (77:11). The goal also gave Carmichael 120 career points, passing Bowling Green's Steve Klein (1993-96) as the all-time MAC leader.
It didn't take long, though, for BGSU to respond. Using the momentum it had begun before the Marshall goal, the Falcons pushed the ball within striking distance and Matt Leardini passed the ball to freshman Paul Seip. Seip dribbled to his left and shot to the far right corner of the net for his first career goal. The score was just 1:25 after Marshall's goal (78:36) and tied the game at 1-1.
Carmichael had an opportunity to regain the lead for Marshall later in the second half on a breakaway, but DeGraff made a great save to keep it knotted at 1-1 and send the game to overtime. Marshall held a 6-5 shot advantage in the second half.
Neither team had a shot in the first overtime period. Then, just 1:13 into the second overtime session, freshman Ben Monnette passed to junior Deryck Freudeman who then found Seip for the game-winner. Seip touched the ball to the left-side of the net for the win.
"Paul had a good day," said Mahler. "He played the entire second half. He can make things happen.
"Carmichael is a handful. I thought our defenders did a good job of trying to contain him."
DeGraff finished with four saves (three in the second half) and Marshall's Jeremy Williams had one save, including one team save. Marshall held a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks.
BGSU (3-10-0 overall, 3-1-0 MAC) hosts IPFW in non-conference action next Friday, Oct. 25, at Cochrane Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
