BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team, playing a rare fall dual match, posted a 7-0 victory over visiting Wayne State University Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 22) at BGSU's Keefe Courts.
The Falcons improved to 1-0 in dual-match play with the win, as all 10 players on coach Penny Dean's roster picked up at least one victory.
Junior Lisa Maloney was victorious at both the top singles and the top doubles flights. She dropped just one game in her singles win over the Warriors' Leila Armin, and teamed with sophomore Susie Schoenberger for an 8-1 triumph over WSU's Katherine Lulgjuraj and Simona Iacoban.
Schoenberger was a winner at the second singles flight, matching Maloney's 6-0, 6-1 win. Schoenberger downed Lulgjaraj in her match.
Sophomore Cameron Benjamin, senior Alyson Gabel, junior Gaby Coello and freshman Heidi Romer all won in straight sets at flights three through six, respectively. Gabel and Romer lost just one game apiece, and Coello dropped only two games in her victory.
In doubles, the team of junior Jessica Johnson and freshman Andrea Meister won at the second flight, as did BGSU's third-flight tandem of sophomores Lindsey Mix and Laura Kokinda.
The Falcons hope to have several members of the squad return to action this weekend, at the Omni Hotels/ITA Midwest Regional Championships (Oct. 24-29). The event, hosted by Michigan State University, will be held at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. Qualifying rounds for singles and doubles begin Thursday (Oct. 24). The doubles main draw starts Friday afternoon (Oct. 25) and the singles main draw begins Saturday morning (Oct. 26). The main draw for singles and doubles runs until Tuesday (Oct. 29).
