Falcons Off To Wolverine Invite

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team will make a short trip north to face some stiff competition this weekend. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to participate in the fourth annual Wolverine Invitational Friday through Sunday (Oct. 4-6).
The University of Michigan will host the invite, which will take place at the U-M Varsity Tennis Center. Participating schools include two Big Ten Conference programs (U-M and Michigan State), three Conference USA members (Cincinnati, DePaul and Marquette) and Mid-American Conference school Western Michigan, in addition to the Falcons.
Play is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. all three days.
The weekend invite marks the second tourney of the season for the Brown and Orange, who hosted the BGSU Invitational last weekend (Sept. 28-29). In that invite, four members of the team won singles titles, while another two Falcons combined to capture a doubles crown.
BGSU went 19-10 in singles play ant 9-6 in doubles action last weekend. Junior Gaby Coello win the title at the third singles flight, while freshman Andrea Meister captured the sixth-flight crown in her collegiate debut. Sophomores Laura Kokinda and Lindsey Mix won the third-flight title in doubles play.
Two members of the Falcons, junior Lisa Maloney (flight #1) and freshman Heidi Romer (flight #4), finished second in their respective singles flights, while sophomore Susie Schoenberger and junior Jessica Johnson each won the back draw in singles action.
The doubles team of frosh Meister and Romer posted a runner-up finish at the third level, losing to Kokinda and Mix in the championship match.
Overall, Kokinda posted a 5-1 record, while Meister was 4-1 in combined play. Five Falcons -- sophomore Cameron Benjamin, Coello, Johnson, Mix and Romer -- went 4-2 on the weekend.
