CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference office has announced the 2002 Academic All-MAC Women's Cross Country Team, and a member of the Bowling Green State University team is on the eight-woman squad.
Senior Christy Paine is the Falcons' lone representative to the team. Paine, a senior from Mentor, Ohio, makes the team for the second consecutive year. She maintains a perfect 4.00 grade point average as a physical therapy major.
Paine has posted a top time of 20:36 this season to date, accomplishing that time at the season-opening Eastern Michigan Open (Aug. 31). She had a time of 21:24 at BGSU's lone home meet, the Mel Brodt Invitational (Sept. 14).
Last year, Paine was named the Falcon Club Female Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2001-02. That award is given to just one female (among all of BGSU's sports) of junior standing.
Paine made both the MAC Honor Roll and the Academic All-MAC Team in 2001 (the latter team was reinstituted in 2001 after a two-year absence). She is a member of the Golden Key honor society, as well as the Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies.
Paine is joined on the 2002 Academic All-MAC Team by Ball State's Katie Nowak and Linda Stebbins, Kent State's Molly Hammer, Miami's Andrea Kremer and Kristen Fryburg and Toledo's Briana Shook and Sara Vergote.
To be eligible for the Academic All-MAC Team, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
The Falcon women finished in ninth place at the 2002 MAC Championships, while the BGSU men were 11th. The Falcons now are preparing for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, scheduled for Saturday (Nov. 16) in West Lafayette, Ind.
