BGSU Baseball Holds Annual Banquet

Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team held its annual banquet on Sunday, Nov. 17. Head coach Danny Schmitz recognized the 2002 squad, which won the school's third Mid-American Conference championship, and handed out individual awards to players from the 32-22 squad.
First baseman Kelly Hunt was tabbed the team's MVP while right-hander Kyle Knoblauch was the Most Valuable Pitcher. Hunt was a NCBWA Third-Team All-American and the MAC Player of the Year while setting several new school records. Hunt was third in the nation in RBIs (1.58 per game, 84 total) and sixth in home runs (0.41 per game, 22 total). He finished with eight more home runs (22) than strikeouts (14) in 214 at-bats. He was named a Third-Team Preseason All-American by NCBWA recently.
Knoblauch finished with just one loss on the season while leading the pitching staff with a 7-1 record. Knoblauch set personal marks for wins (seven), innings pitched (76.2), and ERA (4.93). The 6-foot-8 right-hander was 4-0 in MAC play.
The 2003 Team Captains were also named by Schmitz and includes left-hander Doug Flere, first baseman Kelly Hunt, center fielder David Barkholz, and right-hander Kyle Knoblauch.
Other awards given out are listed below. BGSU has its 2003 season opener on Feb. 21 at the University of Tennessee. The Falcons will play its first season in the Mid-American Conference West Division this year after winning four of the last five MAC East Division titles.
