CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team has been picked to finish seventh in the Mid-American Conference this season. The prediction is the result of the MAC's Preseason Poll, which was announced by the league office Thursday (Feb. 21). The poll reflects the results of voting by the league's head coaches. Eight of the MAC's 10 women's tennis coaches participated in the voting.
The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean received a total of 32 points in the voting. Eastern Michigan and Marshall each received 75 points and four first-place votes to tie for first place, while Western Michigan had 65 points to rank third.
Miami (56 points), Ball State (44) and Northern Illinois (38) also were picked to finish ahead of the Falcons, while Toledo (28), Akron (16) and Buffalo (11) rounded out the poll.
Marshall was the choice to win the MAC Championships by four of the coaches, with WMU receiving two votes and Miami and EMU one apiece.
Dean's Falcon squad finished 8-14 in dual-match play a year ago, and the Falcons were 4-5 in MAC regular-season action to finish sixth. BGSU lost in the quarterfinal round of the league championships.
The Falcon roster features one senior, a junior newcomer, three sophomores and four freshmen. BGSU's next action is March 2, when the Falcons face Cincinnati in the first of 10 consecutive matches away from home.
BGSU opens the MAC portion of the schedule with a March 22 dual at Ball State. The MAC Championships, also hosted by Ball State, will be held on April 25-28.
