EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State won its third straight match of the season by downing the Bowling Green State University women's tennis team, 6-1, Sunday morning (Feb. 3) at Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing, Mich. The Spartans improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 1-3 in dual-match play.
The Spartans captured the doubles point by winning all three doubles matches. At the top doubles, Kate Thomas and Mandy Caldemeyer started the team out by winning the closest doubles contest by an 8-4 result over senior Devon Bissinger and freshman Susan Schoenberger, while MSU's Caroline Lay and Trine Lise Juliussen claimed an 8-1 victory over sophomore Lisa Maloney and freshman Lisa Maloney at the No. 2 position. The Spartans preserved the doubles sweep, in a victory at No. 3 doubles, as Asa Liden and Dora Vastag won, 8-2, over junior Alyson Gabel and frosh Laura Kokinda.
In singles action, Schoenberger picked up BGSU's lone point, downing Juliussen by a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 result.
Both Maloney at the top flight and sophomore Gaby Coello at flight number six extended their matches to three sets before succumbing. The Falcons' other singles competitors were Bissinger (No. 2), Gabel (No. 3) and Benjamin (No. 5).
The Falcons will be back in action Friday (Feb. 8), when Illinois at Chicago comes to town for a 5:00 p.m. match. That contest, as is the case with Saturday's (Feb. 9) 1:00 p.m. match vs. DePaul, will be held at Shadow Valley in Toledo.
