NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Colorado State spoiled the spring-trip opener for the Bowling Green State University women's tennis team, posting a 5-2 win over the Falcons Tuesday (March 12). The neutral-site dual match was held in Newport Beach, Calif.
The loss drops the Falcons' record to 1-9 on the season, while the Rams improve to 4-8 in dual-match play.
CSU captured two of the three doubles matches to take the doubles point. BGSU's winning team came at the second flight, as sophomores Lisa Maloney and Gaby Coello downed their CSU foes by an 8-6 score. Senior Devon Bissinger and freshman Susan Schoenberger lost a narrow decision at the top flight, while junior Alyson Gabel and sophomore Jessica Johnson comprised BGSU's third-flight team.
In singles action, Coello was again victorious, with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 win over the Rams' Dasha Zhurin at the fifth flight. Coello, who did not play in the fall, is now 4-3 in singles play this year, including a 3-2 mark at flight number five.
Bissinger was BGSU's other singles winner, rallying from a first-set loss for a win at the second flight. The Falcons' other competitors in singles included Maloney (flight #1), Schoenberger (#3), Gabel (#4) and freshman Cameron Benjamin (#6).
The Falcons will continue action in California with a Wednesday match at Cal State Northridge. That contest is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. locally (5:00 p.m. Eastern).
