April 08, 2026 | Women's Tennis
BOWLING GREEN, OH -Â Mike Bonnell and the Bowling Green State University (BGSU) tennis program have added McKenzie Shelton to the 2026-27 roster, and she will be joining the team for the upcoming tennis season.
McKenzie Shelton, daughter of Corey and Alicia Shelton, becomes the latest addition to the BGSU Women's Tennis team for the 2026-27 season. Shelton was born and raised in Kennesaw, Georgia, and is set to graduate from ICL Academy in spring 2026.
Shelton comes to BGSU as the captain of her high school team, along with numerous other titles and accolades. Shelton is the vice president of the National Honor Society at her high school, a member of the Leadership Club, a School House leader, and has achieved straight A's in her honors classes. Shelton plans to attend BGSU and pursue her degree in pre-med.Â
"I chose to attend BGSU because the team dynamic immediately stood out to me. I felt welcomed and supported, and I could really see myself growing there. I loved the campus and the surrounding area, and I knew it would be a place where I could build strong friendships and meaningful relationships. BGSU also gives me the opportunity to improve my tennis while receiving a great education. With strong academics, it's the perfect place for me to pursue my goal of studying medicine while continuing to grow as an athlete and person." -McKenzie Shelton.
Shelton exemplifies what a student athlete is by getting it done in the classroom but on the  tennis court as well. Shelton comes to BGSU as the Ozaki Cup Gold Team Champion, the Ozaki-Hastings Sportsmanship Award Recipient, Sugar Bowl Singles and Doubles Champion, multiple-time ITF Singles Champion / Doubles Finalists, and a 2024 Winter Nationals Consolation Finalist.
"We are super excited to have Kenzie joining our team next fall. We first started recruiting her at the National Clay Courts, and then really got serious about it at Winter Nationals. She is a proven winner that will transition very easily into college tennis. Her athleticism, ball striking, and tennis IQ will make her the next great Falcon to push our program further. Our team gets better when she arrives." - BGSU Women's Tennis Head Coah Mike Bonnell
