CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University student-athletes have swept the Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Week awards, the league office announced Tuesday (March 19). Falcon men's tennis junior Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo was named the MAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week, while gymnastics senior Marny Oestreng earned the honor on the women's side.
Lopez-Acevedo, a native of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, had a 4-1 record in the Falcons' three matches last week. He won his matches at the fourth singles and second doubles flights in a 6-1 road win over S.E. Louisiana last Tuesday (March 12). The next day, Lopez-Acevedo was victorious at the third flight, in a third-set tiebreaker, in singles at New Orleans. Saturday (March 16), he was defeated at the third singles flight, but teamed with senior Vitek Wild for a win at the #1 doubles, at 62nd-ranked Michigan State.
Lopez-Acevedo now has a 16-9 singles record this year, leading the Falcons in singles victories. He has a doubles mark of 12-7, for a total of 28 wins this season, the most on the team.
Lopez-Acevedo, a biology major, has a cumulative grade point average of 3.73.
Oestreng, a native of Trogsted, Norway, helped the Falcons cap one of the most successful regular seasons in school history with yet another win last week, a 194.925 to 194.275 triumph at Pittsburgh Saturday (March 16). Oestreng won the all-around with a score of 39.350, and also finished first in the vault (9.875) and the floor exercise (9.900) at Pitt. She placed third in the uneven bars (9.775) in that meet.
BGSU finished the regular season with a 17-1 mark, setting a school record for wins in a season. The old record was 16, set by the 1978-79 team (16-2). The Falcons finished MAC regular-season action with a perfect conference mark for the first time in school history, going 6-0 in the league.
Oestreng has a 3.02 cumulative GPA as a management information systems major.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
The Falcon men's tennis team is in action Tuesday afternoon (March 19), with a dual match at the University of Michigan. Then, BGSU returns home for two Saturday (March 23) contests, vs. Duquesne and Bradley, to begin a six-match homestand.
The BGSU gymnasts are preparing for the MAC Championships, to be held Saturday at Ball State.
