
Women's Swimming Eighth After Day Two Of MAC Championships

YPSILANTI - Miami leads Ohio by just 11 points after the second day of the 2002 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, held at Eastern Michigan University. The host Eagles continue to be in third, followed by Toledo. Complete team standings are at the bottom of the release.
Ohio opened the second night like they did the first, with a tight relay win over EMU, this time in the 200 Medley Relay in a time of 1:44.50. Emily Nayes of Miami won the 400 Individual Medley in a NCAA "B" Standard time of 4:22.95. Liz Korsedal of Ohio won the 100 Butterfly in another NCAA "B" time of :55.93. Kim van Selm of Ohio won the 200 freestyle a time of 1:49.65, good enough for NCAA consideration, while Ellen Borgo of Eastern Michigan won the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.53, another NCAA consideration time. Akron's Michelle Thomas won the 100 backstroke in a time of :57.00.
EMU's Anca Tilea electrified the crowd by breaking an 18-year old pool record, previously held by Marilyn Fishbach of Michigan in 1984, scoring 521.70. Tilea's score also broke the previous MAC record set in 1996 by Reyna Smith of 493.60 and is good enough to qualify for the NCAA Diving Sectionals. Ohio wrapped up the evening by capturing the victory in the 800 freestyle relay in a time of 7:26.84, continuing the string of NCAA "B" Standard times.
The three-day meet wraps up on Saturday at 11 a.m. with preliminaries and 7 p.m. with finals.
