Falcons, DePaul Battle to 2-2 Draw in Frenzied Friday Match at Cochrane

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – DePaul University scored with just 23 seconds left in the match to salvage a 2-2 draw with the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Friday night (Sept. 11). The wild non-conference match was held at Cochrane Stadium.

Jordan Clagette's 90th-minute goal erased what looked to be a come-from-behind win by the Falcons (1-4-1), who got a pair of goals from freshmen less than four minutes apart. Joshua Pedersen and Lucas Brinkman each scored for the hosts, with Brinkman's goal giving BG the lead with just 8:44 remaining in the match.

But, after a foul was called on the Falcons in the final minute of play, the Blue Demons (2-1-3) found the equalizer. A curving free kick by Noeh Hernandez, played from the left side of the field near his team's bench, sailed toward the far post. Just before it reached the end line, Ethan Gordon knocked the ball back across the goalmouth, and Clagette knocked it home from close range at the left post.

After a scoreless first half that saw just two total shots on goal, the Falcons thought they had taken the lead just under six minutes into the second period. Joshua Saavedra and Caue Ramos worked a nifty give-and-go to get the ball into the final third of the field. Saavedra took the return pass from Ramos and slid a through-ball into the path of Michael Lindh. Lindh headed into the penalty area and drew DU goalkeeper Chance Johnson toward him, before sliding a pass to Tyson McCoy on his left. McCoy's one-time finish found the back of the net, but after one of many second-half reviews, the goal was nullified and the match remained scoreless.

Then, the visitors took the lead just under six minutes later. Keagan Pace tapped the ball into the net after a low right-side cross from Hernandez with 33:25 to go.

The Blue Demons had a golden opportunity to double the lead with 17-plus minutes remaining, but Quinn Bedwell put a close-range shot over the crossbar, and the match remained 1-nil.

Then, after a BG throw-in with 12-and-a-half minutes on the clock, Mouhamadou Bachir Cisse played a long left-to-right diagonal ball to Pedersen. Pedersen settled the pass, then blasted a shot from a difficult angle that found the upper-left corner of the net. The highlight-reel goal tied the score with 12:31 remaining.

And, less than four minutes later, Brinkman pressured Johnson after the DU 'keeper received a pass from a teammate. Johnson attempted to cut the ball back, but Brinkman knocked it away from him, then fired a shot into the vacated net with 8:44 to go. But, Claggette and the Demons had a 90th-minute answer as the teams shared the points.

The Falcons had advantages of 17-12 in total shot attempts, 5-3 in shots on goal and 5-2 in corner kicks. Enzo Gil made one save in goal for the hosts, while Johnson had three stops for the Demons.

Gil's save was a diving stop on a wide-open Pace just six minutes into the match. Arguably the best of Johnson's three saves came just over 10 minutes later. After a Brinkman shot was blocked, the ball pinged off of another DU defender to Matheus Filipe, but Filipe's quick shot was denied by a diving effort from Johnson.

STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• The Falcons' starting lineup vs. DePaul included three freshmen – Lucas Brinkman, Matheus Filipe and Joshua Pedersen. Friday's match marked the first time this season that fewer than four frosh were in the starting lineup.
• Two of of BG's four substitutions in the match were freshmen as well.
• Brinkman's goal was his second of the season. He has a team-high five points this year.
• Pedersen, as mentioned, scored his first collegiate goal on Friday night.
• Freshman Mouhamadou Bachir Cisse picked up his first collegiate point, with the lone assist on Pedersen's goal.
• The Falcons remain undefeated against DePaul in the all-time series. BGSU is now 5-0-3 all-time vs. the Blue Demons, and the Falcons have outscored DU by a 10-3 margin in those eight matches.
• BGSU has allowed 11 goals this season to date, and eight of those 11 goals have come in the 76th minute or later.

UP NEXT
• The Falcons hit the road for the next two games, beginning with a Tuesday (Sept. 15) matchup at Milwaukee.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will head to Erie, Pa., to take on Mercyhurst next weekend (Sept. 19), before opening the Missouri Valley Conference slate at home against Western Michigan on Friday, Sept. 25.
