Falcons Drop 5-2 Decision At NIU

AURORA, Ill. - Northern Illinois University got wins at the top-three singles flights en route to a 5-2 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's tennis team Saturday (March 30). The Mid-American Conference match marked the third consecutive win for the host Huskies.
NIU improved to 9-7 in dual-match play this season, including a 3-1 mark in the MAC. BGSU dropped to 1-14 and 0-3, respectively.
The hosts took the doubles point, but BGSU got a victory at the top flight, as senior Devon Bissinger and freshman Susan Schoenberger beat NIU's Savic/Heshelman team, 8-5. Sophomore Gaby Coello and freshman Laura Kokinda lost by an 8-4 count at the middle flight. BGSU's third-flight team consisted of junior Alyson Gabel and sophomore Lisa Maloney.
In singles action, the Falcons got victories from Gabel at the fourth flight and Kokinda at the sixth level. Kokinda downed Molly Opel in straight sets, while Gabel, after losing in a first-set tiebreaker, rallied to win the next two sets.
Schoenberger lost a very tight match to Karrie Tyioran of the Huskies at the third flight. After losing the first set, Schoenberger won the second set in a tiebreaker. But, Tyioran captured the decisive set in another tiebreaker.
BGSU's other singles competitors included Maloney (flight #1), Bissinger (#2) and Coello (#5).
The Falcons now look forward to playing a home match for the first time in nearly two months, hosting the arch-rival University of Toledo in Friday (April 5) action. The following day, BGSU will host Eastern Michigan. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts.
