Falcons Top Toledo, 5-2, For First MAC Win

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team won at five singles flights as the Falcons defeated the arch-rival University of Toledo, 5-2, Friday afternoon (April 5). The Mid-American Conference match, originally scheduled for Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus, was moved indoors to Shadow Valley.
With the victory, the Falcons snap a 12-match losing streak and improve to 2-14 overall and 1-3 in MAC action. The Rockets drop to 4-11 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
UT took an early lead in the match, winning two of three doubles flights to capture the point. BGSU's lone winning tandem came at the third flight, where sophomores Lisa Maloney and Jessica Johnson downed UT's Eva Szuch and Katie Sterling by an 8-1 count.
In singles action, BGSU got a pair of wins at the top two flights, and dominant performances at the bottom three levels. Senior Devon Bissinger captured the lone match that went three sets, defeating Viviana Rivero at the top flight.
Maloney topped Monica Ribero in straight sets at the second flight, while junior Alyson Gabel lost only five total games in her fourth-flight win over Natalya Natyshak. Gabel's victory was her team-leading 13th singles win of the year.
Sophomore Gaby Coello and freshman Laura Kokinda lost a combined one game in their matches, as Coello topped Szuch, 6-0, 6-1, at the fifth flight, and Kokinda did not lose a single game in her sixth-level win over Sterling.
The Falcons' next match is Saturday (April 6), when BGSU hosts Eastern Michigan University. That contest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts, weather permitting.
