Ypsilanti, Mich. - Things didn't get much better for visiting Bowling Green in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Eastern Michigan. The host Eagles scored in the first five innings, including five in the third frame, to jump out to a 14-1 lead. EMU went on to post a 15-8 victory over the Falcons in the nine-inning nightcap of a MAC twinbill.
After smacking four home runs in the seven-inning opener, the Eagles continued their power surge with five more round-trippers in the nightcap off of three different Falcon pitchers.
Junior Doug Flere lasted just two and two-third innings for BGSU, allowing eight runs (all earned) on eight hits and three walks. Freshman Tom Oestrike pitched the next one and two-third innings, giving up five earned runs (six total) with three walks and two strikeouts. Senior Keith Williams pitched the best for Bowling Green, hurling the final three and two-third innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out a career-high five batters. He walked two Eagles.
Offensively, BGSU attempted a comeback beginning with a run in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh, but the deficit proved too much.
Bowling Green used two errors in the sixth inning, along with just three singles, to plate four innings. Spencer Schmitz began the inning with a walk and eventually scored on when Jimmy Lipari was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. An error scored Kelly Hunt and Tim Newell scored on a doubleplay by EMU. Lipari scored later when another Eagle error occurred.
Hunt and Newell were the only Falcons with more than one hit in the game.
With the sweep, BGSU falls to 6-12 overall and 0-2 in MAC play. EMU moved to 9-14 overall and 2-0 in league play. The two teams complete their four-game series at Oestrike Stadium with a doubleheader on Easter Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m.
