Ypsilanti, Mich. - Game two of Easter Sunday's doubleheader at Eastern Michigan University didn't go as well as game one for the Falcons. EMU scored six runs in the second inning, five unearned, en route to a 9-4 win over visiting BGSU.
BGSU appeared to pick up where it left off in game one when centerfielder David Barkholz led off the game with a single to right field. However, when Tim Newell grounded to the EMU second baseman, Barkholz was called for runner's interference, leaving the Falcons with the bases empty and two outs.
A Nick Elrod walk, Kelly Hunt single and Corey Loomis fielder's choice loaded the bases for Andy Hudak, who grounded to the second baseman for the third out, ending the first inning threat for BGSU.
Over the next three innings, BGSU would be retired in order by EMU hurler Anthony Tomey. Meanwhile, the Eagles plated six runs in the bottom of the second inning, four coming on a grand slam by Greg Anglin, to take a 6-0 advantage. Five of the six runs off of starter Burke Badenhop were unearned after a Falcon error in the middle of the inning.
Bowling Green's offense finally got going in the sixth inning. Tim Newell began the frame with a double down the left-field line and moved to third on a Elrod groundout. Another groundout by Hunt scored Newell, making it 9-1 EMU. Loom and Hudak then hit back-to-back singles for Len Elias, who smacked his first home run of the season over the centerfield fence, moving BGSU to within five, 9-4.
Unfortunately, that was as close as the Falcons got. Badenhop suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs (nine overall) on eight hits, three walks and five strikeouts. EMU had just two more hits than Bowling Green, 9-7.
EMU (10-15 overall, 3-1 in MAC) took three of four games from the visiting Falcons, who drop to 7-13 overall and 1-3 in the MAC.
BGSU has its home opener this Tuesday, April 2, against visiting Detroit-Mercy at 2 p.m. Last Tuesday's scheduled home opener at Warren Steller Field was canceled due to several inches of snow.
