Falcon Gymnastics Team Wins MAC Regular Season Title

The Bolwing Green State University Women's Gymnastics team made history Friday night at Eppler Center Cpmplex. By defeating Eastern Michigan the 2002 Falcons claimed the Mid-American Conference regular season title and tied the 1978-79 squad for the winningest record in school history. BG is 16-1 and went a perfect 6-0 in the MAC regular season.
Individuals performing well for the Falcons included senior Mindy Uncth who placed 1st in the bars scoring a career high 9.875. Sophomore Melissa Popovich, junior Ann Marie Kassouf and senior Marny Oestreng all tied for 3rd in the bars scoring 9.825. Popovich and Kassouf tied career highs with these scores. Junior Kathy Emerson also tied a career high on the vault scoring a 9.800. Oestreng again led the squad placing 1st in the all around with a score of 39.400, tying for 1st in the floor with fellow teammate Pia Sjovall (9.900), placing 2nd on the beam (9.825) and tying for 2nd in the vault (9.850).
When asked about his team's spectacular season, head coach Dan Connelly stated, "None of these meets have been easy. We've had to work for everything we've earned. This has been a total team efort."
Due to BG's impressive performances as of late, the Falcons are the favorite going into the MAC Championships at Ball State in two weeks. Connelly said, The MAC's are funny, any team can come in and win at MAC's. Central Michigan has been solid lately and Eastern is always tough. But there is only one team that can beat us for sure and that is ourselves."
Bowling Green defeated conference foe EMU 195.975 to 195.250.
The Falcons return to action over Spring Break as they travel to the University of Pittsburgh next Saturday, March 16.
