
Falcons Fall at Buffalo, 11-6

Buffalo, N.Y. - The University at Buffalo broke open a one-run game with six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat visiting Bowling Green on Friday afternoon, 11-6, in the four-game series opener.
BG got on the board first in the top of the second inning with a sacrifice fly by freshman Kevin Longstreth to right field, scoring Corey Loomis from third base. The Falcons began the inning by loading the bases with no outs.
Buffalo tied the game in the bottom-half of the inning, 1-1. The Falcons regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning off of an RBI-single by Andy Hudak, scoring Loomis from third base.
However, UB tied it again in the bottom of the fourth frame and took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth inning, 5-2.
Loomis hit a two-run homer to centerfield, his eighth of the season, to bring the Falcons to within one run in the sixth inning, 5-4.
The Bulls plated six runs in the eighth off of five hits for a 11-4 advantage.
BG rallied in the ninth when Len Elias reached on an error by the first baseman to begin the inning and moved to second on a Hudak single. David Barkholz then hit a pinch-hit single to center, scoring Elias and moving Hudak to third base. After Jeff Warnock was hit by a pitch, the bases were loaded with no outs. Neil Schmitz then struck out and Tim Newell hit a single down the right-field line, scoring Hudak. But, Nick Elrod struck out and Kelly Hunt popped out to the first baseman to end the rally and the game.
Junior Doug Flere (2-5) suffered the loss for BG, allowing 12 hits (11 singles) in five and one-third innings. Flere gave up five runs (two earned) while striking out four and walking none.
Loomis finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Newell and Hudak had two hits apiece.
BGSU (12-16 overall, 4-4 MAC) plays a doubleheader at Buffalo (8-11, 2-4) on Saturday, April 13, beginning at 1 p.m.
