DeKALB, Ill. - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team lost the doubles point to Northern Illinois, but the Falcons rallied in a big way. BGSU won all six singles flights for a 6-1 win over the host Huskies at the Anderson Hall Courts Saturday afternoon (April 13).
With the win, the Falcons improve to 15-10 overall and 2-0 in Mid-American Conference play. Northern drops to 11-8 and 1-2, respectively.
The Huskies took the doubles point, as mentioned, with wins at the top-two flights. NIU's Aaron Forsberg and Raymond van Wasbeek downed senior Vitek Wild and Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo by an 8-3 score. At the middle flight, the Huskies' Juan Pablo Barriga and Erick Martinez beat BGSU sophomore Milos Jirout and freshman Ian Bliss, 8-5.
The Falcons' third-flight team of junior Geoff Hiscox and sophomore Joel Carney topped Jon Perlman and Paul Glendenning, 8-2, for BG's lone doubles win.
"Losing the doubles point was kind of a wake-up call for us," said BGSU head coach Jay Harris. "We ended up coming out and fighting really hard and well in singles play."
In singles, all six of the Falcons' wins came in the minimum two sets. Hiscox bested van Wasbeek at the top flight, while Wild downed Barriga at the second level.
Lopez-Acevedo, Jirout, Carney and senior Mike Kossoff all picked up singles wins, at flights three through six, respectively.
"I think a lot of the credit has to go to Bowling Green," said Huskie head coach Steven Rodecap on NIU's web site. "BGSU has a good squad, maybe the best in the conference, and they don't have many weak spots. We played doubles well and in singles, they got us into some emotional matches and that helped them out a lot."
Harris also had praise for both his team's play in singles action and the Falcons' small but hardy group of supporters who made the trip to DeKalb.
"We definitely had our best team effort of the year in singles," said Harris. "We fought a hostile crowd, and kind of a circus-like atmosphere at times, and pulled out all six singles matches. Our fan base of the Veitch's and the Carney's really helped us through the match.
It was an exciting win, and it was probably our best win of the season to date, because it came on the road. We are happy to be 2-0 in the MAC, and now we will prepare for the Ball State match."
The Falcons will host BSU, the MAC's other unbeaten, in a Wednesday (April 17) match. That contest is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at Keefe Courts.
