Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green tied a school record with seven home runs on Friday afternoon to post a Mid-American Conference victory over visiting Marshall University, 19-10, at Warren Steller Field.
Kelly Hunt (11) and Len Elias (3) both went yard twice while David Barkholz, Tim Newell and Nate Henchen each added a home run apiece. BGSU scored in every inning but the eighth.
Hunt hit his first round-tripper in the first inning. After Newell hit a one-out double to left field and Corey Loomis laid down a bunt single, the 6-foot-5 first baseman hit a three-run blast to left field for a 3-0 BGSU lead. One out later, Elias hit his first of two home runs, a solo blast, to give the home team a 4-0 advantage after one inning.
However, Marshall stormed right back with four runs of their own in the top of the second inning. David Colangelo hit a two-run single down the left-field line and then Matt White hit a two-run double down the right-field line off of Falcon starter Doug Flere to knot the score at 4-4.
BGSU answered with three more runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. Jeff Warnock received a one-out walk and scored on a double by Barkholz to right field. Newell then came to the plate and hit a two-run homer over the left-field wall for a 7-4 Falcon lead.
With two outs in the third inning, Andy Hudak and Henschen hit back-to-back singles, Warnock walked, again, and Barkholz hit his first homer of the season, a grand slam to right field, for a 11-4 Falcon lead.
Marshall wouldn't go away, though. In the fourth inning, Colangelo doubled and scored on a single by White. Later in the inning, Hiller hit a two-run double to left-center and Ryan Kobbe hit an RBI-single, scoring Hiller, to bring the Herd to within three, 11-8.
BGSU reliever Ryan Lindquist (2-2) entered the game in the fifth and allowed just two runs over the final five innings to post the victory.
The Falcons scored two in the fourth, three in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Hunt finished 3-for-6 with six RBIs while Barkholz had five runs batted in. White led the Marshall offense by going 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Aaron Smith (1-3) suffered the loss for Marshall.
All nine starters collected hits for the Falcons.
BGSU (14-16 overall, 5-5 MAC) continues its series on Saturday with a doubleheader against Marshall (13-18 overall, 4-4 MAC) at 1 p.m.
