CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University men's tennis student-athlete Geoff Hiscox has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday (April 23). Hiscox, a junior, wins the award for the second time this season and the fourth time in his Falcon career.
Hiscox, a native of London, Ontario, was a perfect 5-0 as the Falcons won three MAC matches to clinch the league regular-season title last week. BGSU, now 18-10 overall, finished the regular season with a MAC record of 5-0 to win the title outright for the first time in school history.
On Wednesday (April 17), Hiscox beat Ball State's Jason Pressel at the top singles flight, and teamed with sophomore Joel Carney for a win at the middle doubles flight as the Falcons beat BSU for the first time since the 1978-79 season. The 4-3 BGSU win broke a 24-match losing streak vs. the Cardinals.
On Friday (April 19), the Hiscox/Carney duo posted a doubles win in the Falcons' 7-0 victory over Buffalo, as the Brown and Orange clinched a tie for the league crown. The next day (April 20), BG clinched the outright crown with a 7-0 win at Toledo.
In that UT match, Hiscox downed Dipesh Rao in singles and teamed with Carney for another doubles victory, capping off an unbeaten regular-season in MAC action for the league player-of-the-year candidate.
Hiscox has an overall singles record of 23-9 and a doubles mark of 24-10 this season. He has teamed with Carney for an 18-4 mark.
In his Falcon career, Hiscox currently has 139 total wins to rank fifth in school history. He is seventh on the singles wins list, with 68, and has moved into third place with 71 doubles victories in his BGSU tenure.
Falcon student-athletes have been named the MAC Player of the Week in four of the six weeks it has been awarded this season. Hiscox also earned the honor on April 9, while fellow junior Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo won the award on March 26 after sharing it the previous week.
The Falcons will play a Friday (April 26) match in the semifinal round of the MAC Championships. BGSU, the top seed for the six-team tournament, will meet the winner of Thursday's (April 25) match between #4 Northern Illinois and #5 Toledo. The BGSU match is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. Friday in Buffalo, N.Y.
The winners of Friday's semifinal matches will advance to Saturday's (April 27) championship contest, slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
