MUNCIE, Ind. - Senior Andrea Genter threw a complete-game six-hitter, and her Bowling Green State University softball teammates exploded offensively for a 9-1 win at Ball State University Wednesday afternoon (April 24). The win gave the Falcons a split of the Mid-American Conference doubleheader with the Cardinals.
In the opening game, BSU broke a sixth-inning tie by scoring four times in a 6-2 win over the Brown and Orange.
The Falcons are now 17-22-1overall and 8-10 in MAC play, while the Cardinals are 17-19 and 8-6, respectively.
The Brown and Orange broke on top with a second-inning run in the first game. Sophomore Jenifer Kernahan had a one-out single, and classmate Jody Johnson reached base on a bad-hop single that bounded over shortstop Katie Shea's head. The ball was misplayed by the BSU leftfielder for the first of nine Cardinal errors on the day, allowing Kernahan to move to third base.
On the next pitch, Johnson took off for second base, and the BSU throw eluded the shortstop, allowing Kernahan to score.
The Cards got a run back in the fourth, when Ali Orel led off with a triple, and Carrie Lively singled to score pinch-runner Mandy Snyder.
The Brown and Orange regained the lead in the fifth, as junior Libby Voshell led off with a single. Pinch-runner Marla Murphy stole second base, and moved to third as junior Crystal Wilson beat out a bunt for a hit. Senior Holly Frantz hit a grounder to short that was misplayed for another error, with Murphy scoring on the play.
Ball State tied the game in the fifth, on a Janice Campbell single and an RBI double by Shea. Shea had a 4-for-4 game, and had six hits in eight at-bats on the day.
In the sixth, the Cardinals scored four times to break the game open. Orel had a leadoff single, and after back-to-back fielder's choices, a walk and a single loaded the bases. Then, Kris Burdine beat out an infield single. First baseman Natalie Phillips dove to her right, but was unable to get a glove on the ball. Second baseman Sam Moore fielded the grounder, but Burdine just beat her to the bag.
Then, Campbell singled home two runs, and sophomore Jody Johnson relieved senior Jessie Milosek. Shea greeted Johnson with a single to score Burdine and give the Cards a four-run lead.
Randi Freese (9-9) got the win for the hosts, allowing eight hits over six innings. She struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Milosek took the loss to fall to 8-5 on the year. She allowed six runs in five-and-two-thirds innings. Milosek walked one batter and struck out three.
In addition to Shea's 4-for-4 game, Campbell had three hits for the Cardinals. Both players knocked in two runs.
Eight different Falcons had one hit apiece in the loss.
The Falcons exploded for 11 hits in the nightcap, and broke on top in the third inning. Junior Kandice Machain drew a one-out walk, and moved to third on a Phillips double to right. Phillips had three doubles on the day to up her season total to 13.
BSU pitcher Cortney Winger got Voshell to ground out, but senior Renee Rosemeier then walked to load the bases. The next batter, Wilson, lined a single off the third baseman's glove, with the ball deflecting past the shortstop into centerfield. Both Machain and Phillips scored on the play.
The Cardinals got a run back in the bottom of the inning, on a two-out single by Campbell and a double by Shea. Campbell and Shea combined for 11 of BSU's 18 hits in the twinbill. But, that third-inning run was all that Genter would allow.
In the fifth inning, BGSU broke the game open with four runs. Phillips blooped a double down the left-field line, and Voshell was hit by a pitch. Rosemeier then lofted a fly ball to center that was dropped for an error, loading the bases.
Amy Brownfield came on in relief of Winger, and Wilson greeted her with an RBI single, as Phillips crossed the plate. Then, after a fielder's choice, a wild pitch allowed Rosemeier to score. One out later, Johnson's single to shallow right allowed both Wilson and senior Holly Frantz to score.
The Falcons kept up the offensive success in the sixth. Phillips singled with one out, her third hit of the game, and Voshell followed by ripping a single of her own to leftfield. Then, Rosemeier reached on another error to load the bases. After a fielder's choice produced a force at the plate, Frantz singled to score both Voshell and Rosemeier, giving the Falcons an 8-1 lead.
A two-out rally produced the final BG run in the seventh. Murphy drew a walk, and Machain tripled into the left-field corner to bring Murphy all the way around to score.
Phillips, as mentioned, had three hits to lead BG's 11-hit attack. Frantz and Wilson each had a pair of hits, and Wilson had three RBI. Frantz and Johnson each drove in a pair of runs, while Phillips and Rosemeier each scored twice.
For the Cards, Campbell and Shea each had a pair of hits.
Genter improved to 3-2 on the season, picking up her first MAC win of the year. She allowed one run and six hits, walking four batters and striking out three in her complete-game effort.
Winger (6-8) took the loss, giving up five runs (three earned) in four innings. Brownfield gave up four runs (one earned) in her three innings.
Phillips was 4-for-9 with the three doubles in the DH, while Wilson went 3-for-8.
The Falcons return home for a three-game series against the University at Buffalo. The teams will play a Saturday (April 27) doubleheader and a Sunday (April 28) single game, with action set to start at 1:00 p.m. each day at the BGSU Softball Field.
