Toledo, Ohio - Bowling Green fought back for a one-run win in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Fifth Third Field over Toledo, 3-2.
Nick Elrod hit a one-out double down the left-field line in the sixth inning, then Len Elias reached on a fielding error by the third baseman. Andy Hudak followed with a walk to load the bases for designated hitter Spencer Schmitz.
Schmitz hit a grounder to the first baseman who retired Hudak at second base. However, the shortstop's relay back to first base went wide and second baseman Taylor Eckel through to home plate. There were no Rockets at home plate, though, and the ball went to the backstop, scoring Elias and Elrod and giving BGSU a 3-2 lead.
Falcon starter Kyle Knoblauch (3-1) allowed just one hit and no runs over the final two innings to secure the win. Knoblauch scattered five hits, allowed just two runs on two walks and four strikeouts in seven innings of work.
UT scored a run in the second and third innings for the 1-0 and 2-1 leads. BGSU scored its other run in the top of the third inning on an RBI-single by Elrod, scoring Loomis who had reached on an error by the UT shortstop. Toledo's Todd Thomas (1-1) picked up the loss, allowing three unearned runs on three walks and no strikeouts.
Kelly Hunt's nine-game hitting streak came to an end as he finished 0-for-2. The BGSU leader in RBIs and home runs was intentionally walked twice, including with two outs and Loomis on second base in the first inning.
The win moved the Falcons to .500 (18-18 overall) and 9-6 in the MAC.
