Bowling Green, Ohio - After scoring 14 runs in the sixth inning, Bowling Green went on to defeat the University of Toledo at a windy Warren Steller Field on Sunday, 20-11. Thanks in most part to 40 mile-per-hour winds, five different Falcons hit home runs while two UT players homered.
Toledo had scored six runs in the top of the sixth to gain a 10-3 advantage over the host Falcons. BGSU starter Burke Badenhop was relieved by fellow freshman Matt Hundley in the inning. Badenhop allowed eight runs (five earned) with just two walks and seven strikeouts in five and two-third innings of work. But, the right-hander also hit four Rocket batters and gave up seven hits.
BGSU mounted its comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning, though. The first seven Falcons reached base safely in the inning and BGSU ended up with 14 runs and 11 hits while sending 17 batters to the plate in the frame. Len Elias had four RBIs and Tim Newell had three RBIs in the inning alone. Elias' three-run homer in the inning gave Bowling Green the lead for good, 13-10.
Besides Elias, David Barkholz (second), Nick Elrod (fifth), Tim Newell (sixth) and Kelly Hunt (15th) also went yard for the Falcons. Both Barkholz and Elrod finished with four hits apiece while Hunt and Elias each had three hits. Elrod scored a game-high four runs.
Freshman Matt Hundley (2-3) earned the win by pitching one and one-third innings, giving up two unearned runs on two hits.
The 20 runs scored were a season-high for Bowling Green while the 22 hits tied a season-high. BGSU has now won 10 of the last 11 matchups against its rival Toledo.
BGSU (20-18 overall, 11-6 in MAC) travels to Xavier on Tuesday, April 30, for a 3 p.m. contest then hosts Findlay on Wednesday, May 1, at 3 p.m. The Findlay game is a makeup from a snow-out back on March 27.
