The Bowling Green State University football coaching staff helped staff and teach are youngsters in the first ever BGSU football/Fellowship of Christian Athletes camp. The event was held Friday, July 26.
BGSU special teams coordinator Tommy Thigpen served as the liasion for the Falcon coaching staff.
What motivated you to bring this camp to BGSU?
"Coach Meyer and Pastor Rick Isiah thought it would be a nice thing to do. Pastor Isiah does all the prayer services before games and travels with us to away games and they came up with the idea back in the early spring about putting the FCA group together. They do work with FCA in Toledo and Athletes In Action and that kinda stuff, and Coach Meyer thought it was a good idea so he said let's see what we can do about having a volunteer camp with eighth graders where our coaches would take out a day and spend it with the kids."
"What do the kids learn from this experience?
"Half the day was spent on offense and the other half defense and speed school. We did the same thing we do with our football practice. We took the kids through drills, fundamentals, just trying to teach them the importance of hard work. There is a misconception that you can not be a christian and play football. We're letting them see that we have players here that are Christians, we have coaches that are Christians, so never be ashamed of your faith, never be ashamed to bow your head in prayer. Before every game we do prayer, before every game we do bibleship, you know 15-20 minutes of worship with our players and I think the quicker you can get that fundamental set in them the better the kids are gonna be. To me that's the biggest thing, just showing them that they're not in it alone, the coaches are in it, the players are in it. I know a lot of those kids are judged by their peers and we're trying to show them that it's alright to be a Christian, it's not a bad thing."
