Cleveland, Ohio - Bowling Green State University's David Barkholz was named the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League All-Star game MVP on July 7. The outfielder hit the go-ahead, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Red team a 3-2 victory over the Blue team.
Other Falcons appearing in the summer league's all-star game were first baseman Kelly Hunt and left-handed pitcher Neil Schmitz.
It was also announced that Barkholz and Hunt will be part of a team of collegiates to play in an exhibition game against Team USA on July 15 in Strongsville, Ohio.
Barkholz completed his sophomore season this past spring, batting .322 with three home runs (two grand slams) and 29 RBIs in 48 games. Hunt was the 2002 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year after finishing third in the nation in RBIs (1.58 per game) and sixth in home runs (0.41 per game). Schmitz was a First Team All-MAC selection after collecting six saves and recording a team-low 3.38 ERA in 26 appearances. All three helped BGSU to the 2002 MAC regular-season title.
