Falcons Drop Season Opener at St. Bonaventure, 3-1

St. Bonaventure, N.Y. - The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team began its 2002 campaign on the road Saturday afternoon at the St. Bonaventure/Adidas Soccer Classic in St. Bonaventure, N.Y. The host Bonnies defeated the Falcons in the season-opener for both teams, 3-1.
St. Bonaventure got on the board first in the 37th minute with a rebound by freshman Ryan Mahoney and took the 1-0 lead into halftime. The Bonnies added to the lead just three minutes into the second half with another goal and added its third and final goal of the match in the 72nd minute.
Falcon freshman Adrian Akpan scored BGSU's lone goal and his first collegiate goal in the final minute of the match (89:21). Fellow frosh Paul Seip (Huntington Valley, Pa.) was credited with the assist. Akpan (Grand Prairie, Texas) had Bowling Green's only two shots of the match.
BG was outshot 7-2 by the hosts while the Bonnies held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks, as well.
The Falcons (0-1) face Pittsburgh on Sunday in the final day of the tournament at 12 noon. The Panthers defeated Oneonta on Saturday, 1-0.
