Detroit, Mich. - Bowling Green scored twice in the final four minutes of the game, including the game-winner by Michigan native Mike Falk with 13 seconds remaining, to defeat Wayne State at Joe Louis Arena, 4-3. Falk's goal was set up by D'Arcy McConvey and Brian Escobedo with assists.
Senior Tyler Knight scored at 16:23 of the third period, his second goal of the night, to knot the score at 3-3. Junior Mark Wires and sophomore Alex Rogosheske assisted on the goal.
"We knew exactly what we were getting tonight," said BGSU coach Scott Paluch. "We weren't able to get anything going offensively early. We stayed right with it and were able to make some plays down the stretch to win it."
Wayne State opened the scoring with a short-handed goal by Brent Renfrew at 3:58 of the first period for a 1-0 lead. BGSU's Kevin Bieksa answered with an unassisted goal at 10:25 of the first period to tie the score, 1-1. WSU regained the lead shortly afterwards with a power-play goal by Dustin Kingston at 13:53 of the first period. WSU held a 18-6 shot advantage in the first period.
With BGSU holding a 17-6 shot advantage in the second period, both teams failed to score in the stanza, with WSU holding its 2-1 lead heading into the third period.
Wayne State's Jack Redwood was credited with their third goal of the game when BGSU defenseman Don Morrison mistakenly knocked the puck into the net past Falcon goalie Jordan Sigalet at 1:22 of the third period.
Knight scored at 6:35 of the third period to cut the Falcon deficit to 3-2. It was Knight's first goal in six games. Wires assisted on the goal. The senior assistant captain then tallied his second goal of the game at 16:23, setting up Falk's game-winner.
WSU outshot BGSU 35-33 for the game and were 2-for-5 on the power play. The Falcons were 0-for-5 on its power play. Sigalet ended with 32 saves for the win while WSU's David Guerrera had 29 saves.
"Early, we needed him (Sigalet) to play well to keep us close," said Paluch. "In the second and third period, he did exactly what he needed to do to get us the win."
The win moved Bowling Green to 3-0-0 this season against College Hockey America teams in its final non-conference game of the season. Bieksa extended his current point streak to four games, tying a career-high, while Wires notched a point in his third consecutive game.
BGSU improves to 6-15-2 overall while Wayne State drops to 9-12-1. The Falcons are off this weekend and don't play again until Jan. 31 when they travel to Nebraska-Omaha for a two-game CCHA series.
