Bowling Green, Ohio - Alaska Fairbanks scored three goals in the first period and went on to post a 6-3 win over host Bowling Green at the BGSU Ice Arena on Saturday night. UAF outshot BGSU 33-20 in the first and third periods, resulting in five goals in those two periods for the Nanooks.
"It was clearly a disappointing loss from a lot of different areas," said BGSU coach Scott Paluch. "We basically lost this game in the first period. It was clear that UAF was hungrier and much better prepared for the start of the game tonight. It was a disappointing start for our team and a disappointing outcome.
"I don't believe it had anything to do with the game last night (just 14 Falcon skaters). We're a well-conditioned team."
UAF's Ryan Lang netted his second goal of the season at 5:36 of the first period for a 1-0 lead for the visitors. The Nanooks added to that lead with a power-play goal from Felipe Larranaga at 15:51 of the first period for a 2-0 lead. The Falcons finally answered with a goal by sophomore Ben Assenmacher, his second in as many nights, at 16:18 of the first to trim the deficit to one, 2-1. Alex Rogosheske picked up the assist.
However, UAF added another goal before the end of the period at 19:11 thanks to Cory Rask for a 3-1 Nanook advantage at the end of the first period. UAF had a 19-10 shot advantage in the first 20 minutes.
The second power-play goal of the game for UAF came at 7:27 of the second period from Kelly Czuy and gave them a 4-1 lead. The score stayed that way throughout most of the second period before BGSU sophomore Steve Brudzewski scored his first of two goals on the night at 17:30 of the second period. Erik Eaton and D'Arcy McConvey assisted on the goal and cut UAF's lead back to two goals, 4-2. BGSU held a 13-8 shot advantage in the second period.
UAF built the lead back to three goals early in the third period when Ryan Campbell scored his ninth goal of the season at 1:48. Brudzewski would score his second goal of the night, and team-leading eighth of the season, at 8:08 to get the Falcons back to within striking distance, 5-3. McConvey and Mark Wires assisted on the goal.
Just over one minute later (9:16), though, UAF's Blaine Bablitz scored a short-handed goal with the Falcons on the power play to give the Nanooks the final 6-3 verdict. UAF had a 14-10 shot advantage in the third period while outshooting the Falcons 41-33 for the game.
UAF was 2-for-9 on its power play while BGSU was 0-for-6. Senior Tyler Masters had 35 saves in net for BGSU and Preston McKay had 30 saves for the Nanooks. The game lasted two and one-half hours in part due to a 10-minute delay when UAF's Aaron Voros and BGSU's Jon Sitko went hard into the boards. Voros required medical attention.
BGSU (3-13-2 overall, 1-10-2 CCHA) hosts nationally-ranked Northern Michigan next weekend (Jan. 10-11). Faceoffs are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. both nights.
