Falcons Begin Play At Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team opened play at the 2003 Wolverine Invitational Friday (Oct. 3). Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette, Michigan State and Western Michigan join BGSU and host Michigan in the seven-team field.
At the 'Blue' singles flight, senior Lisa Maloney won her opening match, downing MSU's Shelley Brady in straight sets, before falling to top-seeded Chrissie Nolan of the host Wolverines.
Senior Gaby Coello dropped a pair of matches at the 'Blue' flight, against DePaul's Patra Rehusova and WMU's Rattiya Hiranrat.
In 'Maize' flight action, Junior Cameron Benjamin and sophomore Heidi Romer each lost a pair of singles matches. Freshman Ashley Jakupcin lost her opening match, but rebounded to defeat Marquette's Katherine Nasteva in the back draw.
Junior Laura Kokinda won her opening-round match over Marquette's Kristin Minkowski at the 'Wolverine' flight, before losing to U-M's Leanne Rutherford, the top-seeded player in that flight. Junior Lindsey Mix lost a pair of matches, while sophomore Andrea Meister rebounded from a first-round loss to defeat UC's Mariana Lozano.
in doubles action, the Coello/Jakupcin duo had the most success of any Falcon team, winning a pair of matches. They topped the sister tandem of Klauck/Klauck from Cincinnati, before beating the Rehusova/Falduto duo from DePaul. Coello and Jakupcin have advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 22-team bracket.
The Benjamin/Mix team lost to Michigan's Nolan/Rutherford duo, while Maloney and Romer lost to a DePaul duo before bounding back to beat Marquette's Bonnelly/Smith team.
Meister and Kokinda lost to Cincinnati's Reyes/Liu tandem in Friday action.
The three-day tournament will continue on Saturday (Oct. 4), with action scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. at Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center.
