Bowling Green, Ohi - Bowling Green State University Director of Athletics Paul Krebs and Motor City Bowl Executive Director Ken Hoffman have announced that the University has accepted a bid to play in the Motor City Bowl, Friday, December 26 in Detroit. The Motor City Bowl is presented by Daimler Chrysler, Ford and General Motors and is played indoors at beautiful Ford Field, the new home of the Detroit Lions.
BGSU will play a representative from the Big Ten Conference in the event that will kickoff at 5 p.m. and will be shown on ESPN. It will mark the Falcons school-record fifth national television appearance this season. It also will mark the third game for BGSU against a Big Ten foe after playing Purdue and Ohio State earlier this season.
"We are proud to invite Bowling Green to the Motor City Bowl after watching them put together one of the best seasons in school history," said Hoffman. "We know the entire community is energized about the Falcons making their first bowl appearance in 11 years and BGSU is certainly most deserving of this opportunity. Most of these players were in elementary school the last time BGSU went to a bowl game and we are looking forward to watching this group which has built an impressive legacy of its own with its outstanding play the last three years."
"We are extremely pleased and excited to participate in the Motor City Bowl and we look forward to having the opportunity to compete on a national stage against a member of the Big Ten," said Krebs. "Coach Gregg Brandon, his staff and the players are very deserving of this opportunity as they have elevated the profile of our University through their outstanding effort."
The game will be the sixth bowl appearance for the Falcons who last played in a post-season game in 1992 in the Las Vegas Bowl. BGSU defeated Nevada, 35-34, and also defeated Fresno State, 28-21, in the 1991 California Raisin Bowl. BGSU also participated in the 1985 and 1982 Raisin Bowl and 1961 Mercy Bowl. In each of those games, BGSU fell to Fresno State.
