Bowling Green, Ohio - Ferris State netted two quick goals in the first two and one-half minutes of the third period and went on to post a 2-1 victory over Bowling Green on Friday night at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Jeff Legue scored his fourth goal of the year just 59 seconds into the final period to knot the game at 1-1 and Brett Smith scored his eighth of the year at 2:36 to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead that they never gave up.
"I thought that both teams competed extremely hard," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "I thought Ferris State did a very good job of getting shots to the net and then getting in position to get second chances."
Sophomore defenseman Don Morrison put the Falcons on the board at 12:06 in the first period. Junior Ryan Minnabarriet fired a pass from behind the net to an open Morrison who fired on net past FSU goalie Mike Brown for the early BGSU lead. It was Morrison's first career power-play goal and snapped a streak of three games without a PPG for the Falcons. Freshman James Unger also got credit with an assist.
Shots were even at eight apiece in the first period. However, the Bulldogs peppered BGSU goalie Jordan Sigalet with 23 shots in the second period and the junior withstood the test by stopping them all.
"I thought overall we played hard," said Morrison. "The problem is we let up in the third period for a split second and gave up two goals."
FSU had a 14-7 edge in the final period to finish with 45 shots on goal compared to BGSU's 28. Sigalet had 43 saves while FSU's Brown had 27 stops.
BGSU finished 1-for-6 on the power play with FSU finishing 0-for-5.
FSU moves ahead of BGSU in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings with the win, moving to 4-7-0 in league play and 6-8-1 overall. BGSU falls to 3-8-5 overall and 2-7-2 in the CCHA.
The two teams conclude the two-game series on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the BGSU Ice Arena. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
