LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Junior Jody Johnson spun a two-hit shutout as the Bowling Green State University softball team downed host New Mexico State University, 4-0, at the NMSU Tournament Saturday afternoon (Feb. 15). The seven-team tournament is being held at Presley Askew Field.
With the shutout, the Falcons' second in a row, BGSU improves to 2-1 in the tourney and on the season. The host Aggies drop to 0-8.
The Falcons, the visiting team for the third consecutive game, got on the board quickly. In the top of the first, senior Kandice Machain led off with a single, and she took second on junior Candace Fenton's sacrifice bunt. Machain moved to third on a grounder, then scored on a two-out single by freshman Gina Rango.
BGSU scored again in the third, with Machain again starting the rally. She tripled with two outs, and scored on Fenton's base hit.
The Falcons got an unearned run in the fourth, when Rango reached on an error, then advanced to second on junior Jenifer Kernahan's infield hit. On the play, Rango took third on another NMSU error. Senior Crystal Wilson then hit into a double play, but Rango crossed the plate to give BG a three-run cushion.
Meanwhile, Johnson had yet to give up a hit. She took her no-hit bid into the fifth inning before allowing a leadoff double to Veronica Acosta. The only other Aggie hit was a sixth-inning double by Nicky Bernal.
The Falcons completed the scoring in the sixth, when senior Libby Voshell walked, took second on a groundout, and scored on Wilson's single to center.
BGSU had six hits in the game, with Machain collecting two. The Falcons' leadoff hitter also scored a pair of runs.
In the circle, Johnson walked just one batter and struck out eight in earning a win in her first pitching effort of the season. Amanda Carver took the loss for NMSU, falling to 0-2 on the season..
The Falcons were scheduled to return to the diamond later Saturday, taking on Southwest Texas State.
