UIC Defeats Falcons, 5-2

CHICAGO, Ill. - The University of Illinois at Chicago won three close doubles matches, then captured four of the six singles flights to record a 5-2 victory over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Saturday (Feb. 15). The dual match was held at the Hyde Park Tennis Club.
The Falcons, now 2-4 in dual-match play this season, were narrowly defeated in two of the three doubles matches. BGSU got a victory in a close contest at the middle flight, as the duo of junior Jessica Johnson and sophomore Cameron Benjamin downed their UIC foes by an 8-6 score.
At the top flight, the team of junior Lisa Maloney and sophomore Susie Schoenberger suffered a 9-7 setback, while the third-flight tandem of junior Gaby Coello and sophomore Laura Kokinda lost, 8-6.
In singles action, Maloney won a first-set tiebreaker over Ayca Gumuscu before posting a 6-2 win in the second set at the second flight. In fourth-flight action, Benjamin won her match vs. Zvjezdana Malesevic.
Coello and Kokinda each extended their matches to three sets before succumbing. Coello lost to Corey Steven at the third flight, while Kokinda was defeated by Molly Smith at the fifth level. BGSU's other competitors included senior co-captain Alyson Gabel at the top flight and freshman Heidi Romer at flight number six.
The Falcons will return to action on Friday (Feb. 21), hosting Wright State at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo. That match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. BGSU will continue the four-match homestand with a Saturday (Feb. 22) contest vs. Butler, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Shadow Valley.
