TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team capped off an undefeated weekend and moved to .500 on the young season with a 5-2 victory over Butler University Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22). The non-conference dual match was held at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
With the win, the Falcons of coach Penny Dean improve to 4-4 on the year. BGSU is just one victory away from matching the total for all of last season (5-18).
The visiting Bulldogs took an early lead in the match, capturing the doubles point with wins at the top-two flights. The lone Falcon team to pick up a doubles win was the third-flight tandem of senior Alyson Gabel and junior Gaby Coello.
In singles action, the Falcons got straight-set wins from sophomore Susie Schoenberger, junior Cameron Benjamin and freshman Heidi Romer at the first, fifth and sixth flights, respectively. Gabel rallied from a first-set loss to down her opponent in three sets at flight number two.
BGSU also got a three-set win from junior Lisa Maloney. Butler's lone singles win came from Laurel Clements at the fourth flight, as she topped Coello in three sets.
The Falcons return to action with a Friday (Feb. 28) match vs. Toledo. The match, the Mid-American Conference opener, is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. at Shadow Valley.
