TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team opened Mid-American Conference play on a winning note, taking five-of-six singles matches en route to a 5-2 victory over the University of Toledo. The arch-rivals met at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club on Friday (Feb. 28).
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in MAC play. UT dropped to 4-4 and 0-1, respectively.
The 'visiting' Rockets took the doubles point to open the match, winning at both the first and third flights. UT's Monica Ribero and Viviana Rivero were victorious over BG's duo of junior Lisa Maloney and sophomore Susie Schoenberger at the top flight, by an 8-4 count.
At the third doubles flight, BGSU's two freshmen, Heidi Romer and Andrea Meister, lost an 8-5 decision to the Rockets' Eva Szuch and Jenn Meister. Jenn Meister, who transferred to UT from Youngstown State, is Andrea's older sister.
The Falcons' lone doubles victory came courtesy of senior Alyson Gabel and junior Gaby Coello at the middle flight. The duo beat Daniella Moran and Eunice Paravicini by a 9-7 score. Both Coello and Moran hail from Guayaquil, Ecuador.
In singles play, Ribero topped Schoenberger at the top flight, for what would turn out to be the Rockets' lone singles victory. BGSU got three convincing wins at the bottom three flights, with Coello losing only one game in her fourth-flight victory over Szuch. At the sixth level, sophomore Laura Kokinda did Coello one better, winning over Jenn Meister by identical 6-0 scores. Sophomore Cameron Benjamin dropped only two total games in her fifth-flight win over Moran.
The Falcons led by a 3-2 score, and needed a win in only one of the remaining two flights. As it turned out, the Brown and Orange would win both matches for the 5-2 victory. Gabel downed Rivero at the second flight, in the lone three-set match of the day. At the third level, Maloney's win in a first-set tiebreaker propelled her on to a straight-sets victory over Paravicini.
BGSU takes a three-match winning streak into Saturday's (March 1) tough test, a MAC match vs. Eastern Michigan. The Falcons and Eagles are scheduled to meet in a 1:00 p.m. contest at Shadow Valley.
