Bowling Green, Ohio - Western Michigan's Trevor Cook scored the game-winner at 10:12 of the third period and the visitors added an empty-net goal later at 18:47 for a 4-2 victory over Bowling Green on Saturday night at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Just like the previous night, the two teams entered the third period knotted at 2-2. Also like Friday night, BGSU outshot the Broncos in the final period (10-6), but the Falcons couldn't answer Cook's goal midway through the period.
"I thought the game was very similar to all four games we played against this team," BGSU coach Scott Paluch said referring to the four-game series this season. "Throughout every single contest the game was really tight and they found a way in three of the games to get the win. And tonight was no different." WMU won the season series 3-0-1.
Senior assistant captain Tyler Knight got the Falcons on the board first with a power-play goal at 11:55 of the first period. The PPG was his third goal in the two games this weekend and extended his goal streak to a career-best three games and his point streak to a career-best four games. Knight has 4-1--5 on his current point streak. D'Arcy McConvey and Mark Wires assisted on Knight's goal.
BGSU outshot WMU 13-6 in the first period and took its 1-0 lead into the second period.
WMU's leading goal scorer, Dana Lattery, tied the score at 1-1 at 2:11 of the second period with his 18th goal of the season. Jeff Campbell then scored a power-play goal at 4:10 to give the visitors a quick 2-1 lead.
BGSU freshman Brett Pilkington then scored his first goal since returning from an eight-game absence due to an injury at 8:12 of the second period to tie the score at 2-2. It was his fifth goal of the season and was assisted by McConvey and freshman Jon Sitko. For the second night in a row, the two teams went to their lockerooms at the second intermission tied at 2-2. Both teams had 11 shots in the second period.
Cook's goal at 10:12 in the third period gave WMU the 3-2 lead and Paul Davies added the empty-net goal at 18:47 for the clincher over the Falcons.
BGSU held a 34-23 shot advantage for the game and were 1-for-6 on the power play. WMU was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
WMU goalie Scott Foster had 32 saves in net for the win, while sophomore Jordan Sigalet had 19 saves for BGSU.
BGSU drops to 7-20-3 overall and 4-17-3 in the CCHA. WMU improved to 14-16-2 overall and 12-11-1 in the league.
The Falcons travel to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., next weekend for its final two-game road series of the regular season when they play Lake Superior. Both games are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. faceoffs. BGSU has its final home series the following weekend, March 7-8, when CCHA-leading Ferris State comes to town.
