CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University junior Jody Johnson has been named the Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference office has announced. She earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career.
Johnson, a native of LaGrange, Ohio, went 1-0 with an earned run average of 1.40 in the Falcons' first weekend of action, at the New Mexico State Tournament (Feb. 14-16). This week marks the first weekly awards of the 2003 softball season, so all games played to date this season were counted in the voting process.
In her first action of the season, Johnson fired a two-hit shutout at host NMSU. She took a no-hitter into the fifth inning of that game, walking just one batter and striking out eight in the win.
In her other appearance, Johnson allowed three runs (two earned) in three innings of relief work vs. Indiana. On the weekend, she allowed opponents to bat just .206 against her.
Johnson earned the Pitcher-of-the-Week honor for the MAC's West Division. Northern Illinois' Lisa Mattke was the divisional player of the week, while Marshall's Amanda Williams (player) and Kent State's Kate Leary (pitcher) earned the East Division honors.
The Falcons, 2-3 on the young season, are idle until the Louisville Tournament on March 8-9. BGSU will face Illinois State, Ohio University and host UL at that tourney. The home opener for the Brown and Orange is scheduled for March 25 against Michigan.
