CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Host University of Virginia pushed a run across the plate in the eighth inning for a 1-0, extra-innings triumph over the Bowling Green State University softball team Thursday afternoon (March 13). The non-conference game was held at The Park.
With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 11-11 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 6-5-1. BGSU saw a five-game unbeaten streak snapped.
Junior Jody Johnson (1-2) suffered the loss for the Brown and Orange despite throwing a complete-game four hitter. Johnson walked four batters and struck out two, surrendering only the unearned run.
The Cavaliers' Christina Grimm (3-2) picked up the win with a complete-game five hitter. She walked three Falcon hitters and had three strikeouts.
The lone run scored after Virginia's Lauren Dennis was placed on second base via the international tiebreaker rule. The leadoff batter, Heather Field, sacrificed Dennis to third base, and Jessica Taylor followed with a game-ending single down the left-field line.
The Falcons advanced just two runners as far as third base over the first seven innings. Junior Candace Fenton had a one-out single in the first inning, and took second on a fielding error by UVa leftfielder Johanna Kaiser. Fenton took third base on a wild pitch, but Grimm then got a strikeout and a grounder to shortstop to end the inning.
In the fourth, senior Libby Voshell drew a leadoff walk and took second on a bunt single by freshman Gina Rango. One out later, junior Valerie Tipton singled to load the bases. Then, senior Crystal Wilson flew out to center field, and the Cavaliers turned a double play as Voshell was out at the plate, 8-3-5-2, to end the inning.
The hosts had threatened to score early on, loading the bases with no outs in the first inning on a two-base error, a bunt single and a walk. But, Jenn Wynn hit a liner to second baseman Abby Habicht, and the Falcon freshman turned an unassisted double play. Johnson got the next batter, Sara Larquier, to ground out to second.
In the fourth, UVa put runners on second and third with two outs, but junior catcher Jenifer Kernahan and third baseman Rango combined to pick Larquier off third to end the inning.
In the fifth, the hosts put runners on first and third after a single, a sac bunt and an error. But, Johnson got Taylor to hit a grounder back to the circle for the second out, then induced the next hitter, Ruby Rojas, to hit an inning-ending popup.
The Falcons had runners on second and third in the top of the eighth. After Habicht started the inning on second via the international tiebreaker, Grimm retired the first two batters. Fenton singled to send pinch-runner Stephanie Finkel to third base, but Grimm got Voshell to hit a fly ball to right. Then, the hosts pushed the game's lone run across to gain the win.
Fenton led the Falcons at the plate, with two of the team's five hits. Taylor had two hits and the game's only RBI for the host school. The Falcons were blanked for the first time this season.
BGSU will remain in Charlottesville for six more games this weekend. The Falcons will participate in the Cavalier Classic on Friday through Sunday (March 14-16), playing doubleheaders against Seton Hall, Stony Brook and the host school.
