FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State lefthander Donnie Bair pitched five scoreless innings to pace the host Bulldogs to a 7-3 victory over the Bowling Green State University in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic Thursday night (March 13) at Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs improved to 10-12 and 4-0 in the tournament while the Falcons dropped to 1-6 and 0-4 in the PJQ. Fresno State has now won a season high five games in a row.
Bair (1-0) scattered three hits over five shutout innings in his first start of the season.
Freshman outfielder Chase Moore and junior catcher Brandon Marcelli powered the Bulldogs' hitting attack. Moore broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with his third home run of the season and went 2-for-3 with two RBI on the night, while Marcelli homered in the sixth inning.
Falcon starter Keith Laughlin (0-1) allowed five runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings to pick up the loss in his first start of the season
Down 6-0, the Falcons mounted a comeback in the seventh with a three run rally. Nate Henschen, who was 2-for-3 in the game, had a leadoff single and took second when Kevin Longstreth was hit by a pitch. One out later, Jimmy Lipari's single to right scored Henschen and sent Longstreth to third. The Bulldogs made a pitching change, and David Barkholz reached on an error, with Longstreth scoring BG's second run. Tyler Wasserman drew a walk to load the bases, and Lipari then scored on a groundout by Kelly Hunt. Hunt went 2-for-5 with the RBI to lead the Falcons.
The Bulldogs completed the scoring with a seventh-inning run on a single, a hit batter, a groundout and a sacrifice fly.
For the hosts, Moore and Ryan Haag each had two hits as the Bulldogs held a 9-8 advantage in that department.
Next up for the Falcons in the tourney is a Friday (March 14) game vs. Pennsylvania, scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. local time (4:00 p.m. Eastern).
