TOLEDO, Ohio - Xavier University captured the doubles point, then got wins at each of the top-four singles flights to post a 5-2 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's tennis team Saturday afternoon (March 22). The match, originally scheduled to be held at BGSU's Keefe Courts, was moved to the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
With the victory, the Musketeers move to 11-2 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 6-7.
BGSU got singles wins at the bottom two flights. Sophomore Cameron Benjamin downed Andrea Kelley in straight sets at the fifth flight, losing a total of only four games. Freshman Heidi Romer won a second-set tiebreaker for a straight-sets win over XU's Emily Tuchscherer.
Benjamin has won two consecutive singles matches, while Romer has won two-straight and five of her last six singles contests.
In doubles play, BGSU's lone win among the three flights that counted came at the third level, where Romer teamed with junior co-captain Lisa Maloney for a convincing 8-2 win. The match marked the first time the two have played together.
The Xavier contest was BG's final non-conference match of the 2002-03 season. The Falcons close regular-season action with seven MAC matches, beginning with a four-match road swing. BG will travel to face Northern Illinois Friday (March 28) before meeting Western Michigan the following day.
