BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team won the doubles point, then captured five of the six singles matches for a 6-1 win over the University of Akron Friday afternoon (April 18). The Mid-American Conference match was held at Shadow Valley in Toledo.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 9-10 overall and 4-4 in MAC play. The three-game winning streak matches a season best. UA dropped to 6-13 and 1-7, respectively.
Additionally, the win, coupled with Miami's Friday loss to Eastern Michigan, enabled the Falcons to clinch the fifth seed and a first-round bye for next week's MAC Championships. BGSU, picked to finish seventh in the preseason coaches poll, will play the fourth seed (most likely Northern Illinois) in the league tournament's quarterfinal round next Friday morning (April 25). The MAC standings can be found below.
In the match, which was moved from BGSU's Keefe Courts due to Friday morning's rain in the Bowling Green area, the Falcons took two of the three doubles matches to capture the first point. BGSU won the doubles point for the fifth time in 19 dual matches this season.
The duo of junior Lisa Maloney and sophomore Susie Schoenberger won a narrow 8-6 decision at the top doubles flight. At the second level, BGSU got an 8-3 win from senior Alyson Gabel and junior Gaby Coello. The Zips eked out a 9-7 win at the third flight.
In singles, Akron's lone point came at the top flight, as Irina Strembitsky posted a win over Maloney. BGSU's other five singles competitors each earned victories in straight sets.
Schoenberger lost only three total games in her second-flight win over UA's Courtney Brenkus, while Gabel downed Diana Serafini at the third flight.
Coello (fourth flight) and freshman Heidi Romer (fifth flight) lost only four and five games, respectively, in their singles wins, while Laura Kokinda posted a 6-0, 6-3 win at the sixth level.
"It was a good team effort," said BGSU head coach Penny Dean. "A lot of the matches were very hard-fought, and the scores don't indicate how close they were."
The Falcons will close the regular season with Saturday's (April 19) home match vs. Buffalo. That contest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts.
