Volleyball Defeats Iowa State In Five

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - It took four Falcons to reach the double digit plateau in kills and five sets, but the Bowling Green State University volleyball squad downed Iowa State in five game, 30-24, 30-28, 29-31, 28-30 and 15-8, on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Arena. The Falcons ended the BGSU Invitational with a 2-1 tournament record and now sit at 6-3 overall.
In set number one the Brown & Orange got off to a commanding start, pulling ahead 13-7. The Cyclones got as close as 17-15, before junior Nadia Bedricky added a kill which was followed by back-to-back errors by Iowa State to put the Falcons up 20-15, eventually capturing set one 30-24.
In game two, the Cyclones led 28-23 with the Falcons on the ropes. Junior Melissa Mohr and senior Taylor Twite added kills to get the score to 28-25. Iowa State called a timeout to settle the Cyclones down, but did not get the desired result. BGSU scored the final five points led by Twite's three kills down the stretch. The Falcons won game two 30-28.
The Cyclones captured sets three and four despite the Falcons having a chance to put Iowa State away in set three. Leading 29-28, and serving for the match,BGSU committed back-to-back errors allowing Iowa State to win set three 29-31 and set four 28-30.
The Brown & Orange controlled set five from the outset. Bowling Green got out to a 5-2 lead with kills by Bedricky and Sikorski. The Cyclones got as close as 6-5 before BGSU went on a 7-2 run to take a 13-7 lead. Bowling Green won set five 15-8.
For the match four Falcons reach double digits in kills: Taylor Twite (21) Susie Norris (18), Samantha Rennau (18) and Melissa Mohr (12).
Freshman Chrissy Gothke established a new career-high in digs with 26. Joining Gothke with double digit dig performances were Norris (20) and Rennau (12).
The Falcons had several key blocks throughout the match, namely by junior Melissa Mohr who had two solo blocks and five block assists. Mohr had two solo and six block-assists all of last season.
The Falcons(6-3) will welcome Oakland University on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at Anderson Arena. Match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.

NORRIS CONTINUES HER CLIMB UP THE RECORD BOOKS Last week senior Susie Norris became the 12th Falcon in school history to surpass the 1,000-kill plateau, as well as, is one of seven Falcons o have 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. If Norris continues this season at her current pace, several other Falcon records are in jeopardy. Norris sits in 10th place in the kills category with 1,065 and second in school history in digs with 1,265, 79 away from first in school history held by Holli Costein from 1989-92.
MOHR STUFFS BACK THE COMPETITION In her first two-season junior Melissa Mohr had a total of two solo blocks and six block-assists. This season alone Mohr has compiled eight solo blocks and 39 block-assists. She leads the team with 41 total blocks and is averaging a team leading 1.14 blocks per game.
